The Truth About Irvingia Side Effects

Clinical trials show Irvingia gabonensis extract has valuable weight loss benefits. The next obvious question is whether or not its use is accompanied by adverse side effects?

The available study reports mention lenient side effects whereas other sources indicate that there are not the least bit adverse reactions. Let’s examine these statements to learn what exactly is the truth.

The nuts/ seeds of the fruits of the African Mango tree are the source of Irvingia extract used in weight loss supplements. These same nuts have been used for centuries in traditional recipes in the countries where these trees are indigenous.

Locals still use the Etima, Ogbono, or Dika nuts as they call them as soup thickeners, pastes and other culinary purposes. The widespread culinary use of this spice indicates the absence of adverse reactions.

This is compounded further by the fact that in the countries where Irvingia nuts and fruits are a native food source long-term consumption actually seemed to lead to positive side effects. These are; resistance to obesity and diabetes. These observations attracted the attention of researchers and instigated further research.

According to the studies done on the weight loss effects of Irvingia there are no side effects either. The involved scientists stated that: “Irvingia gabonensis is all-natural and there have been no known serious side effects during clinically trials.”

So you want me to believe there are only positive effects? No, that’s not the case. Let’s go on.

Other reports and abstracts do mention some minor side effects. These only occurred in the starting phase of the clinical trials. After initial intake of their daily dose of Irvingia some of the subjects declared they experienced minor unwanted effects such as flatulence, mild headaches, and sleeping problems.

  • Flatulence is a frequently occurring side effect when in detox, especially after a diet change. Also the seriousness of congestion, and colonic toxic levels contribute to this symptom. So it’s actually a natural effect that will most likely fade away during the first days.
  • The mild headaches, reported by some persons, are theorized to be caused by the increased blood flow in the body and the brain. It seems to occur only in indiviuals who are sensitive to such effects.
  • Irvingia increases mental and physical energy levels which may initially cause sleep problems. Within a few days this side effect was reported to be gone. A solution may be to increase physical activity in the first part of the evening, or to consume this additional energy otherwise.
  • Some individuals indicated to experience dizziness but there is no direct causal link to the intake of Irvingia extract and this side effect. Lightheadedness is a common physiological effect during dieting. Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) is a a logical consequence of eating much less than normally ( weight loss experts agree that such drastic dietary changes are not recommended). One can easily counter this by eating more frequently. Additional advantage is that metabolism will get a boost.

An intended side effect of Irvingia weight loss supplements intake is a decreased appetite. It is a desired effect which helps people reduce their caloric intake.

Whether or not Irvingia is safe to use for breast feeding and pregnant women remains to be seen. There haven’t been any clinical trials examining this matter.

So in conclusion, there are some mild Irvingia side effects. Partially desired, others seem relatively harmless. According to studies this supplement is safe to use for most people. If you are in doubt for any reason, always make sure to consult your doctor or medical practitioner for advice.
